'Jimmy Kimmel' puts BMW behind wheel
Jimmy Kimmel Live has partnered with BMW on a pair of broadcasts, including a leap-day themed show Wednesday.
BMW has taken on latenight. The automaker inked a deal with ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to serve as the title sponsor of Sunday night's "After the Academy Awards" show and has bought out all of the commercial time during Wednesday's leap day-themed broadcast. It's also taking over Kimmel's YouTube channel throughout March, sponsoring videos with custom spots. BMW is using the branded entertainment effort to promote its redesigned 3-series sedan, rolling into showrooms. Media agency Universal McCann brokered the deal for BMW. For the Oscar show, BMW and UM also produced a custom-branded opening title sequence, with Kimmel landing in front of his theater in a tuxedo but missing a bowtie. Show sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez races up Hollywood Boulevard in a BMW with the tie to save the day. UM also produced multiple bumpers promoting the leap-day episode. The loose tie-in with the Oscars is a coup for BMW given that Hyundai is the kudocast's official auto sponsor. Kimmel's Oscar episode, his seventh, includes Oprah Winfrey and Coldplay. Episode regularly ranks as one of his highest rated each year, growing from its average of 1.7 million viewers to 4 million. Over the years, the talkshow host has used the broadcast to premiere pre-produced comedy shorts like "F*@#ing Ben Affleck"; "Handsome Men's Club," with Matthew McConaughey and Sting; "Hottie Body Hump Club"; and "Tom Hanks's Toddlers in Tiaras" that wound up becoming online hits through Kimmel's YouTube channel, which has racked up more than 500 million views since its launch in 2006. This year, Kimmel presented "Movie: The Movie," which features Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Martin Scorsese, Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, Don Cheadle, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Samuel L. Jackson, Cameron Diaz, J.J. Abrams, Jessica Biel, Jason Bateman, Tyler Perry, Edward Norton, Colin Farrell and Ryan Phillippe. But BMW has a bigger presence on Wednesday, when the show will air commercial-free, with the automaker featured during a five-minute skit (that it hopes goes viral), while the rest of the show will be presented by BMW and include comedic vignettes starring Kimmel, guests and crew that celebrate having more time. BMW wanted to tie in with the one day every four years when everyone receives a full 24 hours' worth of more time, the company said. "It began with an insight into the target audience of BMW: very affluent consumers that, within reason, buy whatever they need, but the one thing they can't buy is time, the one thing they covet the most," said Paul Furia, a former William Morris agent who now serves as senior VP, experience architect, at Universal McCann. BMW sparked to "Jimmy Kimmel Live" because "latenight was a priority" given the younger target demo his show appeals to but also the comedian's past relationship with marketers like General Motors and Volkswagen, creatively integrating their products into the show. The leap-day episode was also "in the middle of the launch window" for the 3-series, Furia said. And it became more cost-efficient to buy out ads on "Kimmel," with a 30-second spot averaging $30,000-$45,000, than on a primetime series, for example. It also helped that Kimmel drives a BMW and that his humor is "clever and witty, not stupid comedy," Furia added. "BMW wanted to find a way to have fun with itself." 50's set drama grabs Brit viewers
'Call the Midwife' scored better numbers than the first season of 'Downton Abbey.'A TV drama about midwives, nuns and moms-to-be set in 1950s London has proved the surprise hit of the season in Blighty. The first season of "Call the Midwife," which ended Feb. 19, attracted an average 8.7 million viewers -- a 30 audience share -- for BBC1, making it the channel's most popular new drama series in 10 years, and besting the debut season of "Downton Abbey" on ITV.After two episodes, the BBC commissioned a second season, which will air next year. The six parter, each episode an hour long, has been described by one reviewer as an "audiovisual cuddle." But that description fails to do justice to a primetime series showing fairly realistic portrayals of home births -- and life in general -- in a poverty-stricken district of East London close to the docks. The show was exec produced by Pippa Harris, who set up shingle Neal Street Prods. with helmer Sam Mendes and producing partner Caro Newling in 2003. Before that, she was head of drama commissioning at the BBC.The show, based on the memoirs of bestselling author Jennifer Worth, is set in a convent that houses an order of nuns devoted to nursing, and a team of young midwives.Much of the show's appeal comes from challenging viewers' expectations, Harris says."One of the pleasures of Jennifer's writing is that she often turns your assumptions about religion on their head. So you often have scenarios where it is the young midwives who are shocked by people's morals or their behavior," she says. "And the nuns -- who are far more understanding, because they've seen it all before -- are unshockable."The show comes at a time when the funding of healthcare is a hotly disputed topic in the U.K., but viewers' reactions to the show on this score can be surprising."Just as many people look back with a rose-tinted glow, and think how much more caring the medical profession were then -- and just as many people look back and think 'Gosh, what a terrible time to have given birth,' " Harris says. The series was penned by "Cranford" and "Upstairs Downstairs" scribe Heidi Thomas and helmed by Philippa Lowthorpe, and benefited from the cross-pollination of the different talents among Neal Street's partners. "As a company, we work in feature films, TV and theater, and the three of us -- myself, Sam Mendes and Caro Newling -- we've always worked (on) each other's projects," Harris says. "Sam was around to look at the early cuts of those first episodes, and I think Philippa found his notes some of the most helpful in terms of shaping the finished episodes."This is the company's first drama series, following a string of feature films, including "Revolutionary Road," "Away We Go" and "Jarhead." It has a first-look deal with Focus Features, for which it is developing "Middlemarch" and "Butcher's Crossing," and is developing a feature film version of TV series "Lost in Austen" for Sony.Further TV series are in the works, including a U.S. remake of French cop series "Spiral" for L.A.-based BBC Worldwide Prods., being penned by Meredith Stiehm ("Homeland"); and Paris-set hostage thriller "Grand Hotel" for Canal Plus. Both are being developed with French company Son et Lumiere. Contact Leo Barraclough at leo.barraclough@variety.com

The material is controlled by producers Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz who were invited by McCarthy’s ICM agents to get a peek after they produced the adaptation of his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Road.

Top Moments: Kristen Bell's Sloth Meltdown and OMG! Gossip Girl Revealed
Kristen Bell Our top moments each week: 13. Most Bitter Memory: Throughout a look and feel around the Tonight Show, Madonna, a recently minted director, confesses that in her own acting days, she really hated who audition. "I truly drawn at some," she states. when Jay Leno presses for particulars, she crosses her arms just like a petulant child. "I am not telling," she states. I've got a voodoo toy of this director." We have got fifty dollars that states that she's speaking about Chicago. 12. Strangest Face-Off: The Actual Average women will always be recognized to fight rough (hairpiece-tugging, table-flipping, etc.), but Sheree and Marlo's blowout requires a particularly strange turn once they argue in regards to a party in Capetown. Marlo accuses Sheree to be poor and needing to return everything she buys at Neiman Marcus (okay...?) and before very long, both women are moving their heads laterally and speaking in high-pitched gibberish. Say no to, it's difficult enough to know what these women say once they speak British. 11. Best Reason behind the divorce: David Letterman grills Late Show guest Jennifer Lopez about her modern-day, Sonny-and-Cher-style relationship with estranged husband Marc Anthony, with whom she co-produces Q'Viva!, a real possibility show on Univision. "It's fun because we all know one another very well and that we actually work well together," Lopez states. "However it has its own moments. Exactly the same stuff that ... did not actually work sometimes show up.Inch Letterman, who marked his 30th anniversary at the end of-evening TV Wednesday, presses for good examples. "Communication. You are speaking and also you differ on something, after which you are like, 'Oh, be quiet!' You will see it on the program a bit,Inch Lopez states. "So Marc would say 'Be quiet!' for you?Inch Letterman asks. "No," J. Lo bashfully confesses before bursting into laughter. 10. Best Check Mate: She makes desserts, she crochets and she or he wears a hat made entirely of laces and ribbons. I believe it's reliable advice that New Girl's Jess is really a "girly girl." However when her precocious, doe-eyed ways put her at odds with Nick's girlfriend, Julia, she tries her better to mend fences, until she knows that no quantity of twee baked goods will melt Julia's hard exterior. Rather, Jess is the owner of her girlishness. "My inspections have baby farm creatures in it, bitch," she claims, a tad too happily. But seriously, who does not love baby farm creatures? 9. Greatest Occasions: Have you ever desired to watch a 78-year-old lady get stoned, WE may be the network for you personally! On Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best, Joan Rivers along with a friend park inside a nondescript cul-p-sac together with her friend Lynne so she will smoke her weed - recommended for "stress," duh - inside a pipe named Louis XIII. The 2 get excessive that Joan needs to call Melissa to get them. However the high jinks don't finish: They visit a food truck for many munchies ("See that sky," Joan states. "You realize the number of individuals are searching in the same sky?") and, after Melissa puts these to mattress, Joan and Lynne sneak to the spa, begin fully dressed and drink the pool water from her high heel shoes. When Melissa arrives to reprimand them, Joan pulls her daughter in to the tub. "it's like Natalie Wood is at this pool," Joan cracks. 8. Best Dilemma: Fueled by her fascination with Finn and her devastation over to not get instructions from her dream school, NYADA, Rachel accepts Finn's proposal on Glee. However, within the last couple of moments from the episode, her finals-acceptance letter arrives! However when Kurt asks Rachel if she's told Finn yet (completely not aware he put a diamond ring onto it), Rachel stares blankly, leading us to think she's reconsidering marital bliss. Don't be concerned, Rachel! There's already an expert arrange for a NY-based spin-off for you personally, Kurt and Finn, meaning everything needs to exercise! Oh, wait... 7. An Ideal Storm (Out) Award: Alicia is subpoenaed to testify before a great jury about accusations of Will bribing idol judges around the Good Wife also it will get ugly fast. District attorney Wendy Scott-Carr makes Alicia confess to transporting on the sexual relationship with Will before an area of other people, in addition to her estranged husband's second-in-command, Cary. But the moment Wendy attempts to connect the dots and insinuate that Alicia is effective at the office due to her affair with Will, she stacks up, informs Wendy she's unmanageable leaving in the center of her testimony, daring Wendy to arrest her. Don't make her obtain the baseball softball bat! 6. Naked Truth Award: Around The Bachelor, Courtney, cunning as always, is not pleased with discussing Ben on the group date, so she comprises her very own rules and would go to his accommodation for any nightcap. As they seems surprised, Ben wastes virtually no time inviting her in and uncorking a wine bottle. But Courtney has also try this: skinny-sinking. "I am likely to rock your world," she informs him, because they strip lower around the beach and encounter water. A minimum of Ben's not concerned about shrinkage. 5. Best Family Reunion: Around The Vampire Journals, a really angry Elijah decides to undagger his two siblings and sister, to ensure that they outnumber Klaus after which abandon him. And the tears folded lower the Original's eyes, the ultimate family member showed up - Esther, Klaus' mother - who was simply locked away inside a mysterious coffin. But rather than joining in around the bitterness towards him, Esther states, "You're my boy and i'm here to forgive you. I would like us to become a family again." 4. Worst Reason behind the divorce: That which was the final hay in Kim Kardashian and Kris Humprhies' marriage? Closet space. Really. Because they prepare to depart the The Big Apple around the season finale of Kourtney and Kim Take NY, Kris informs her that he will ship his boxes to her house in L.A. Is sensible, right? Couple living together. To not Kim. She's "stress attacks" at the idea and informs him to simply bring a bag. "Basically was Kris, I'd hate you," Kourtney informs her. "You are this type of bitch." "It's correct, Kim," Kris adds. "You are not prepared for someone inside your existence." Kim cries mascara tears and sobs to her siblings and Scott Disick about how exactly she wanted a fairy-tale wedding and can't have Kris' stuff in her own house. "You need to do realize you are married, right?" Scott realistically asks. Hey, Kim, you need to do realize how absurd you are being to create Scott seem such as the voice of reason, right? 3. Most Bittersweet Farewell: Around the Chuck series finale, Sarah manages to lose her reminiscences from the last couple of years - coincidentally, exactly the same length of time that it required her to be seduced by and marry Chuck - via a spy-centric plot device (a faulty computer that submitted into her brain). The series bypasses an enormous action-packed ending and rather concludes having a hug - a hug which has all of the magical potential of Sleeping Beauty's and Snow White's legendary smooches to wake Sarah from her amnesia. Before we are able to determine if this only-on-TV solution works, the screen fades to black , and Chuck isn't any more. 2. Best OMG Moment: Gossip Girl remembers its 100th episode in true Upper East Side-style - an over-the-top royal wedding and never one, but two OMG high cliff-wardrobe hangers: First, Blair calls Serta - and never Chuck - to save her from her story book-switched-nightmare wedding. However, there is a real jaw-dropper when Gossip Girl herself is revealed to become master manipulator Georgina! We are still adhering by our theory that Georgina is simply a GG proxy, but thinking about her personal vendettas from the entire crew, that's one heck of the frightening future. 1. Funniest Meltdown: It's her birthday and she'll cry if she would like to. Throughout a look and feel on Ellen, Kristen Bell recounts how her fiancé, Dax Shepard, surprised her on her behalf birthday by employing her favorite animal, a sloth, to go to the festivities. Globe contenders for best animated film
Light charm competes with scruffy surrealism in this bumper crop of excellent animated pics "The Adventures of Tintin"Paramount PicturesSteven Spielberg first became interested in the global phenomenon that is Tintin after European critics compared the director's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" to a Tintin adventure, and he quickly acquired the film rights. But it took 30 years for Spielberg to finally make his Tintin film, largely based on "The Secret of the Unicorn," the 11th in the series by Belgian artist Herge. For his first-ever animated film, Spielberg teamed up with "The Lord of the Rings'" Peter Jackson who produced, and shot the film using the 3D motion capture system pioneered by Jim Cameron on "Avatar." The result cleverly captures Herge's original colorful and bold graphic style, and with its tale of Tintin's search for a sunken treasure, the 3D adventures feels perfectly meshed with Spielberg's own sensibilities. Brit actor Jamie Bell, a lifelong Tintin fan, voices the plucky young reporter, and Andy Serkis the booze-addled Captain Haddock."Arthur Christmas"Columbia PicturesThe 3D computer animated Christmas comedy (co-produced by Sony) was originated and developed by respected U.K. animation house Aardman Studios (of "Wallace & Gromit" fame), and marks the first time Aardman has moved away from its successful stop motion technique into 3D CGI. But with its highly detailed behind-the-scenes look at the complex logistics of Christmas present delivery, and a story of how Santa's son Arthur must save the day when the operation's machinery breaks down, the film stays true to Aardman's skewed take on things. A top Brit voiceover cast includes James McAvoy as Arthur and Imelda Staunton as Mrs. Santa, and the film travels around the world, with such locations as the North Pole, Africa, Mexico, Idaho, Cuba and Cornwall, England, all gorgeously animated. The project took four years to complete, with more than 300 artists contributing to such rapid-fire visual gags as a hand-sanitizing dispenser for hard-working elves."Rango"Paramount PicturesWhile most animated projects happily embraced cuteness, typically rendered with the popular hard-edged shiny CG look, this subversive Western starring a delusional bug-eyed chameleon antihero went for a photo-real scruffy, frayed look that perfectly matched its "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" meets "High Noon" vibe. And the funky outside-the-box aesthetic approach was undoubtedly fueled by its creatives' virgin status in animation -- it was the first toon film for both "Pirates of the Caribbean" vet Gore Verbinski and industry VFX powerhouse ILM -- which freed them up to play around with conventional methods of animation. Instead of recording voiceover talent alone and singly, Verbinski assembled his actors (including Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant and Harry Dean Stanton) in a mocked-up saloon set and let the ensemble act out their tale. This untraditional approach, which Verbinski half-jokingly calls "emotion-capture," resulted in a raw, chaotic but lively audio track, which then drove the visuals."Puss in Boots"Paramount PicturesAfter appearing in "Shrek 2" back in 2004, the feline hero finally gets his starring vehicle in this beautifully animated CG 3D feature, which once again stars Antonio Banderas (in his eighth performance as Puss) as the title character in full Zorro/Latin lover mode. The "Shrek" spin-off was directed by "Shrek 3's" Chris Miller with an appropriately light and charming touch, executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, and features some inspired voiceover work from Puss sidekicks Salma Hayek as Kitty Softpaws and Zach Galifianakis as Humpty Dumpty, as well as Bill Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris as Jack and Jill, the murderous villains of this redemption tale in which the tabby has to clear his name. Set in a glowing, romanticized version of old Spain, the prequel to the "Shrek" films has no overlapping characters apart from Puss himself, and marks the first time a DreamWorks Animation feature has been partly animated in India."Cars 2"Walt Disney PicturesWith Pixar head John Lasseter once again in the driver's seat for the first time since "Cars" (he co-directed -- with Brad Lewis -- a story he also originated and developed), this sequel (only the second in the company's history) to the 2006 global blockbuster also went global in terms of its design and storytelling. While the original was firmly parked in the quintessential small-town Americana setting of Radiator Springs and Route 66, this year's model roared off to glamourous World Grand Prix races in Japan and Italy, with pit-stops in France and the U.K. before returning home to America. The expanded horizons, reportedly inspired by Lasseter's travels around the world promoting "Cars," provided fresh backdrops for Pixar's flashy CG animation and visual jokes (Britain's queen appears as a Rolls-Royce) and a layered storyline that combined the visceral thrills of racing with James Bond-style international intrigue and spies.GOLDEN GLOBES 2012Tales trump top talents | Globes embrace TV's new, offbeat shows THE NOMINEESDrama: Picture | Drama: Actor | Drama: Actress | Comedy: Picture | Comedy: Actor | Comedy: ActressAnimationThe Cecil B.
