I have a question about my Baldwin-Gibson SG electric guitar?

So I have a Baldwin Gibson Signature series SG, and every time I try
to turn the distortion up, the amp starts screaming out of
control.What causes the problem? Is it the pickups, or maybe the
wiring? Should I raise/lower the pickups?
